Obstructive Sleep Apnoea Surgery
Obstructive Sleep Apnoea Surgery
Ever conscious about snoring when you travel with you friends and family?
Majority of the world’s population don’t release that they suffer from sleep Apnea…
Don’t be the victim of this hidden disease…
The word Apnea refers to blockage of upper airway during sleep. Blocking the supply of oxygen to the brain and the rest of the body momentarily during sleep causing irregular heart rhythm. Which results in heavy snoring. At time the brain kicks you out of sleep to let you know that your airway passage is blocked and need to change the position of your sleep.
There are three types of sleep Apnea
- Obstructive Sleep Apnea – more to do with blockage of upper airway passage or relaxation of throat muscles during normal respiratory function.
- Central Sleep Apnea – this is due to the communication between the brain and the respiratory organs.
- Mixed Sleep Apnea – combination of the Obstructive Sleep Apnea and Central Sleep Apnea.
Various Surgical and non-surgical procedures are considered to treat sleep Apnea.
Non-Surgical Procedure
Non-Surgical methods such as using PAP (Positive Airway Pressure) devices are used to deliver air pressure from a machine through the nose / mouth piece placed while you sleep. This is the most commonly used devices to a quick and temporary fix of Sleep Apnea disorders.
Depending on the airway pressure, oral devices perform with different functions such as
- CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) – Pressure stays constant.
- APAP (Autotitrating Positive Airway Pressure) – Pressure adjusts based on airway passage resistance.
- BiPAP (Bilevel Positive Airway Pressure) – Pressure for breathing in and breathing out can be pre-set individually based on your comfort.
Several options for the mouth / nose piece based on your comfort can be purchased such as Nasal Masks, Full Face Mask & Nasal Pillow Mask.
Surgical Procedure
- Tissue Removal (Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty - (UPPP)) A surgical procedure performed to partially remove the tissue behind the mouth and above the throat which opens up the upper airway passage. In some rare cases the adenoids and the tonsils may have to be removed to further ease the blockage. This procedure is performed at the hospital under general anaesthesia.
- Jaw Surgery (Maxillomandibular Advancement) or only Mandibular or only Maxillary Advancement as required In this procedure the doctor tries to achieve more space between your tongue and soft palate by surgically moving forward the lower jaw from the facial bone. This is also a procedure performed at a hospital under general anaesthesia.
- Nasal Surgery This procedure usually corrects a deviated Septum where patients develop a crooked partition between both the nostrils. A surgical procedure performed which removes the polyps and straightens the partition between both the nostrils restoring normal breathing.
